About His Mistletoe Wager

In late 2015, way before my debut novel was published, I finished writing my second novel Her Enemy at the Altar. At the time it was a standalone book and although I loved the hero and heroine to distraction, I waved them off and blithely moved on to the next story. Then the book came out and I received a swathe of messages from readers asking me when the sequel would be published so they could see Connie and Aaron Wincanton again. You see I gave the heroine, Constance Stuart, a younger brother—one who it turned out saved the day in that story—and my readers thought he deserved his own book. I responded to every message with the same answer, perhaps one day. But as I had already begun writing my Wild Warriners series, that day wouldn’t be soon

Then the lovely people at Harlequin Mills & Boon asked me if I would be interested in writing one of this year’s Christmas books. An offer I couldn’t turn down, because frankly what fool would? Who doesn’t love a good Crimbo romance? I was halfway through the third Warriner story at the time, and as that revolves around a smallpox epidemic we all agreed it didn’t immediately scream Christmas.

It was then that Connie’s irascible brother Hal Stuart cantered out of the mist and declared his story would make the perfect feel-good, festive romcom. To be fair, he was right. As a character he is the perfect leading man—tall and handsome, charming, irresistible, with a heart of pure gold, and is determined to never grow up. You see, he had wild oats still to sow. Lots of them. Getting hitched was not in his ten-year-plan. Unfortunately, like so many plans in Romancelandia, poor Hal’s was destined to go awry and the book opens with him bored of the revolving door that was his love life. He’s twirling a sprig of mistletoe and wondering where his missing vigour has gone.

On a quest to find it, and being a bit of a rogue, he accepts a wager from his brother-in-law and best friend, Aaron, to use his sprig of mistletoe to steal five kisses in different locations before Twelfth Night. Of course, Hal assumes he has to kiss five separate women, but his brother-in-law chooses only one. Sullen Lizzie. A young woman with a very dark secret who has sworn off men for life. A woman who has a particular hatred for charming rakes. Lizzie has been badly let down by a man and never wants another one.

Despite the fact Hal and Lizzie both feel their life is missing something—which obviously is each other—they were both very troublesome in getting them to realise it. At times, although they instantly became the very best of friends, the pair of them were so stubbornly resistant to a romance I found myself shouting at my keyboard. Fortunately, the story takes place over Christmas. Which means there is always mistletoe...

His Mistletoe Wager:

"Five berries equal the five separate kisses I challenge you to steal."

Notorious rake Henry "Hal" Stuart, Earl of Redbridge, is certain he'll win his Christmas bet—until he learns he'll be stealing Lady Elizabeth Wilding's kisses. A woman who refuses to be charmed!

Once jilted, Lizzie must guard her heart, because the ton is unaware of her scandalous secret—her son! Despite their increasing attraction, she can't risk the persistent Hal bringing down her defenses. But when her former fiancé returns, Lizzie realizes that perhaps Hal's the one man she can trust—with her heart and her son…
